Men’s Basketball Unable to Keep Up with the Roadrunners

MAHWAH, NJ | After an entertaining game with many ups and downs, Rutgers-Newark (5-8) could not overcome a formidable opponent in Ramapo (10-3). Final score: 71-62.

In the opening minutes, the Scarlet Raiders were looking strong. Levi Holton and Essam Assaf led the way as they kept a small but consistent lead in the first ten minutes. Greg Jones tipped in an offensive rebound with 11:30 on the clock to make it a 13-8 game.

At 7:33 in the first half, the Roadrunners took their first lead of more than one point. Peter Gorman sank a three to put his team up 21-19, and it was a back-and-forth game for the rest of the half. Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd put up 11 points in the first 20 minutes, and Donovan Crawford collected his first basket of his Rutgers-Newark career. At the break, the two teams were inseparable: 33-33.

The second half started slow, but it was all Ramapo. Star senior Jordan Myers scored each of the first six points of the period, and by 17:22 the hosts had established a six point edge.

Eli Camacho hit a fastbreak three to jumpstart the Scarlet Raiders offense nearly five minutes in. The Roadrunners kept pushing, but Rutgers-Newark got up to speed. They took their lead back at 8:43 through Essam Assaf, but only briefly. After 20 seconds, Ramapo was back on top.

Then, the Roadrunners really took off. In the blink of an eye, and thanks in part to good free throw shooting, they created a 12 point gap with 4:33 remaining in the game.

The Scarlet Raiders hustled hard to bring it back once again, but their opponents were too much. They ran away at the end of the day with a nine point victory.

Men's basketball continues their conference schedule this Saturday, January 11th. They will host TCNJ at 6:00 PM right here in the Golden Dome.
