Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Holton Reaches 1,000 Points But the Lions Take the Win

NEWARK, NJ | Despite a hot streak in the second half, the Scarlet Raiders (5-9) were unable to commemorate Levi Holton's milestone with a victory. TCNJ (11-3) came away on top with a final score of 74-61.

TCNJ started out in control, establishing an 8-2 advantage after a Matthew Solomon layup three and a half minutes into the game. Rutgers-Newark quickly followed. Donovan Crawford put them within three at 13:43 with a nice finish at the rim.

However, the Lions were not messing around, and they quickly jumped out ahead again. Jonathan Okocha nailed a triple with 11:33 on the clock to make the score 20-10.

TCNJ's Matthew Solomon continued to dominate in the paint. Not only did he finish the opening period with ten points, but he broke a rim with a dunk. This caused a delay of nearly 20 minutes as staff replaced the broken equipment!

After play resumed, the final seconds of the half were played out, and the visitors entered the break with a 41-29 lead.

The second half began with a flurry of action. Eli Camacho and Travis Miles each hit three-pointers to bring the Scarlet Raiders within six. TCNJ responded, but Camacho had caught fire. He buried two more triples within two minutes, and a pair of Levi Holton buckets shorted the deficit to just a single point. Donovan Crawford followed with a pair of free throws, giving Rutgers-Newark their first lead since the second minute of the game.

But momentum would not favor the hosts for much longer. Jack Vreeswyk provided an immediate response with a three of his own, handing the lead back to the Lions. Crawford answered in kind, but Vreeswyk came right back and did it again. For the next six minutes, the two teams would remain neck and neck. Rutgers-Newark held a slight lead for most of this period, but couldn't get ahead by more than three points.

With 6:26 remaining in the game, David Alexandre gave TCNJ their lead back, and the visitors went to work rebuilding their advantage. By the time the clock reached 2:26, they were ahead by nine and they were not looking back. The Scarlet Raiders struggled to produce offense in the final stages. Their last points came at 3:22.

In the end, Rutgers-Newark showed a lot of spirit but lacked the firepower on offense to get the job done. Their conference record falls to 1-6.

Men's basketball hits the court again this Wednesday, January 15th. They will head to Union, NJ to take on Kean University at 7:30 PM.
