Raiders Fall to Keystone, 68-59

NEWARK, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team battled Keystone College tonight at The Golden Dome, but a fourth quarter comeback from the Giants halted the Raiders' night, as they fell 68-59.

Arlenny Medina hit a jumper from the left side of the court with 15 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to bring the Raiders to within seven points. The two-pointer added to Medina's then total of eight points to lead all players on the court.

The Raiders outscored the Giants, 17-14, to go into halftime down by four points. Rutgers-Newark held the edge in made field goals, but it was Keystone's ability to knock down a quartet of three-pointers that proved to be the difference maker on the scoreboard.

Rutgers- Newark came out in the third quarter on fire. The Raiders held the Giants to four points on a pair of made jumpers, while the home team scored 14 to take a 48-42 lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Keystone scored the first basket, but then the Raiders rattled off seven consecutive points to silence the visiting team bench. From there, it was an 11-0 run by Keystone, including a pair of made treys. The Raiders were held to a mere four points in the final four minutes of play, as the Giants surged ahead to victory putting up 26 points in the final quarter.

Rutgers-Newark (3-9) had four players finish in double digit scoring. Medina led the way with 17 points and four assists. Raihanna Abdus-Salaam had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.

Keystone (7-5) was led by Tamari Hubbard who tallied 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. Anyah Ortiz also registered a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Raiders will travel to Ramapo on Wednesday, Jan. 8 to tip off play in the new year. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.
