Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

The Scarlet Raiders Remain Grounded as the Red Hawks Fly High

MONTCLAIR, NJ | Rutgers-Newark (4-5) struggled to produce points as they fell on the road to Montclair State (5-2) with a final score of 70-49.

The Scarlet Raiders looked confident in the first few minutes. Pascal Dodard and Levi Holton powered them to an early 9-3 edge. After Montclair State tied it at nine, they jumped ahead again. However, with 12:36 remaining in the first half the Red Hawks pushed ahead, and they kept on pushing.

The hosts picked up their first two possession lead seconds later, then after a nearly two minute stretch of no points being scored by either team, the gap began to grow. With just under four and a half minutes left in the opening half, Montclair State were ahead by double digits, and by halftime the two teams were separated by fifteen points. After a promising start for Rutgers-Newark, their opponents had taken firm control of the game.

In the second half, the scoring was sparse. The first points were scored just over a minute into the period when Pascal Dodard nailed a three-pointer to cut the difference to 12. The Red Hawks brought it back up to 17, then Essam Assaf and Travis Miles brought it back to 14 before two and a half more minutes of radio silence on the scoreboard.

When the points began to flow again, they came from the home team. Jacob Morales hit a three to go up by 19 with 9:24 on the clock, putting the Scarlet Raiders in a deep hole. They fought with all their might, but that lead never came back down below 10 points. Mike Jackson buried one last three-pointer at the end of the game to secure a 21-point victory for the Red Hawks.

Rutgers-Newark men's basketball will look to bounce back this Wednesday, December 11th. They will head to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson at 7:30 PM.
