Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

William Paterson Squeezes By the Scarlet Raiders

WAYNE, NJ | In a barn burner of a game that saw 86 points scored in the second half, the Scarlet Raiders (4-6) fell just short of victory as the Pioneers (4-5) came out on top, 70-67.

The game started somewhat quietly. William Paterson picked up a four point edge four minutes into the game thanks to a three-pointer from David Martinez. That shot was followed by over two and a half minutes of scoreless basketball. Tremendous hustle and strong defense kept both teams off the scoreboard until a fastbreak layup from Essam Assaf at 13:22.

For the rest of the half, the Pioneers were able to consistently remain marginally ahead. That was until just under three minutes remaining in the first period when Eli Camacho nailed a three to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead for the first time in 15 minutes. Travis Miles and Assam Essaf built that lead up to five, and seemingly out of nowhere the visitors went into halftime with a two-possession lead.

Rutgers-Newark looked to continue their momentum after the break with early baskets from Travis Miles and Pascal Dodard. Both sides went back and forth as time ticked on, and once more the two competitors refused to be separated by double digit points. Levi Holton and Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd were producing on offense, with 19 points and 16 points respectively.

The Scarlet Raiders' lead was always slim, and with just over six minutes left the Pioneers were able to break the seal and get back on level terms. Andre Wells hit a pair of free throws to put the hosts up by one, and from there the teams remained within two points of each other right up until the final 90 seconds.

With 1:26 on the clock, Shane Geene rolled in a layup to give William Paterson their first lead of more than three points since the first half. The gap grew to six, but Holton and Jenkins-Floyd whittled it back down to three. The Pioneers picked up a crucial free throw which was followed by a last second three from Camacho that brought the Scarlet Raiders within just a single point, but it just wasn't enough. The hosts narrowly came out on top, and Rutgers-Newark dropped to 1-3 in NJAC play.

Men's basketball will attempt to stop their four game skid this Saturday, December 14th. They will host Stockton University at 6:00 PM right here in the Golden Dome.
