Rowan Ruins Senior Night With Late Jumper, 69-67

NEWARK, NJ | Kelvin Marshall, Russell Ayala, and Rafeeq Reid were honored before what would turn into a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) instant classic game against Rowan University on Saturday night at The Golden Dome. Rowan would hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to hold off the Scarlet Raiders 69-67.

Rutgers-Newark (12-12, 8-9) shot 46% from the floor and out-rebounded the Profs 40-30.  Marshall tallied a career-high 17 points while Levi Holton finished with a 15-point, 15-rebound (career-high) double-double. Rowan (19-5, 13-4) shot 37.9% from the field and 33.3% from three but turned the ball over just 11 times in the win. Marcellus Ross finished the game with 19 points while Booty Butler recorded a team-high six rebounds with 13 points.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the game strong with a 10-0 run, holding Rowan scoreless for nearly five minutes. However, once Rowan saw the ball go through the hoop, they responded with a 10-0 run of their own to knot the game up at 10. Ayden Brown cashed in from deep to end the run and catapult Rutgers-Newark into the lead once more. As the first half began to wear down, Rowan pushed its lead out to eight before Ayala and Holton hit a pair of jumpers to cut the lead in half. With 1:09 remaining, Pascal Dodard wiggled his way into the paint for a layup, bringing Rutgers-Newark within three. Rowan would get the final point of the half, however, with a basket by Josh Wright to send Rowan into the locker room with a five-point lead.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders continued to keep chipping away at the lead and preventing Rowan from expanding its lead to double-digits. With 7:54 to go, Brown hit a jumper to tie the game at 52 before collecting his and-one to put the Scarlet Raiders ahead for the first time since early in the first half. Marshall kept Rutgers-Newark in the driver's seat as he laid one off of the glass en route to his career night. Rowan would flip the script down the stretch and hold on to a two-point lead until free-throws pushed it to three with 30 seconds remaining. Down three with 14 seconds to go, Ayala hit a fading three-pointer to once again level the playing field. Rowan, however, had other plans as Booty Butler hit a pull-up jumper with two seconds left to steal the win away from Rutgers-Newark and spoil senior night.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, February 14 for a Valentine's Day showdown against TCNJ to close out the regular season.
