Women's Basketball Senior Night Spoiled by Rowan, 65-49

NEWARK, NJ | Samiyah Horton and Ebony Odom Barnes were honored at The Golden Dome this evening for senior night before their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) clash against Rowan University. Despite a late push by Rutgers-Newark, Rowan held on for the 65-49 win.

Rutgers-Newark (2-22, 1-16) was led by Horton's 21 points and Tracey Ilderis' 10 rebounds. Arlenny Medina finished with 10 points and two steals. Rowan (12-12, 9-8) finished the game shooting 40% from the floor with Kate Herlihy leading the charge with 16 points.

The Scarlet Raiders, behind Horton and Houston-Allen, took a 9-0 lead over the visiting Profs in the opening quarter. The 9-0 run forced Rowan to call a timeout to slow down the surging Scarlet Raiders. The timeout would work in favor of Rowan as the Profs would go on a 16-3 run to end the quarter. In the second, defense prevailed as Rutgers-Newark tallied 10 points, edging out Rowan's eight.

Out of the break, Rowan found its stride and recorded its highest tally of the game with 24 points. Rowan extended its lead over the Scarlet Raiders, after leading by just one, with a 14-3 run to put Rowan comfortably in the lead. In the fourth, the Scarlet Raiders tallied 16 points to try and close the gap and were able to get it down to 12 before Rowan slammed the door closed to hang onto the win.
