NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark softball season came to a close this afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field as they dropped a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Rutgers-Camden, 2-1 and 8-1. With the pair of losses, the Scarlet Raiders end their 2024 campaign with a 6-30, 3-15 record while Rutgers-Camden's season continues with a 17-23, 7-11 record.
Game 1: Rutgers-Camden 2, Rutgers-Newark 1
The Scarlet Raiders scattered four hits but suffered two errors in the first game while Rutgers-Camden scored two runs on five hits.
Madison Umlauf (3-13) pitched five scoreless innings against Rutgers-Camden with one walk and five hits. Rutgers-Camden found both of its runs in the top of the sixth inning when they capitalized on a pair of errors by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark would respond in the bottom of the frame with a lead-off single by Kayla Cardozo. Mariah Rimas-McManus advanced Cardozo to second before a throwing error moved Cardozo to third putting her in prime position to score. Marissa Houseknecht brought Cardozo home with an RBI infield ground out, however, the Scarlet Raiders inning would come to a close via a strikeout.
Maddie DiGiorgio sat the Scarlet Raptors down in order in the top of the seventh to set up a chance at a walk-off in the bottom of the frame. Alison Miller gave the Scarlet Raiders a chance to go ahead with a two-out single up the middle but the rally would come to an end with a ground out to end not only the game but the season for the Scarlet Raiders.
Game 2: Rutgers-Camden 8, Rutgers-Newark 1
The hits increased in game two for both teams as Rutgers-Camden scattered 10 while Rutgers-Newark tallied 9. The error bug plagued the Scarlet Raiders in game two to the tune of five errors. Rutgers-Camden, however, wasn't immune to errors as they were charged with two in the game.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the second game with a run in the top of the first, scoring on an error by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark then tied the game up in the bottom of the second with an Alison Miller single up the middle which scored Kalyna Figol via an error.
Rutgers-Camden enlarged their lead in the top of the 5th when they scored three runs followed by three more in the final two innings of play to punch their ticket to the NJAC Playoffs.
