Men's Soccer Drops 2024 Opener, 2-0, to Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA | The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer season got a rocky start to its 2024 campaign as they fell 2-0 to Randolph-Macon on the road. 

Randolph-Macon (1-0) wasted no time opening their scoring ledger for the season as they found the back of the net just two minutes into the contest. An early corner kick allowed Randolph-Macon to take a 1-0 lead early on, as the cross sailed over the outstretched arms of Ben Nakahara and onto the head of Dylan Matheny. The Scarlet Raiders' (0-1) responded with several shots on target by Erick Cortes, Darius Holmes, Bryan Rodriguez, and Ian Brown, however, Adam Braithwaite was up for the task and kept Rutgers-Newark off the board with several saves. Randolph-Macon ended the first half the same way they started it, with a goal. Hawkins Adcock received a pass from Grant Counts and placed it past Nakahara to close out the first half with a 2-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders. 

Stout defense by both teams was the theme of the second half as both teams were held scoreless for the final 45 minutes. It wasn't because of a lack of opportunities for the Scarlet Raiders, as they put 9 of their 10 shots on target but were stonewalled by Braithwaite throughout the game.
