Men's Soccer Falls Short Against No.9 University of Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA | The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer squad squared off against No. 9 University of Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon and fell 5-2 in the non-conference bout. 

Mary Washington (2-0) found the back of the net early and often against Rutgers-Newark (0-2). Sammy Amorose scored his first of four on the day in the 12th minute off of a pass from Julian Schmugge. The Eagles doubled their tally five minutes later before Jake Milne tallied the second shot of the game for the Scarlet Raiders. 

Amorose completed his hat trick in quick succession, netting two goals in two minutes, to increase Mary Washington's lead over the Scarlet Raiders to 4-0. Amorose netted one more before the half to send the Eagles into the break with a 5-0 lead.

The Scarlet Raiders eventually found the back of the net when Daniel Velazquez capitalized on a penalty kick before Esteban Hidalgo gave the Scarlet Raiders their second of the game. Despite the late flurry of goals, Rutgers-Newark could not complete the comeback as Mary Washington held on to secure the win.
