Rutgers-Newark Women's Volleyball Opens 2024 Campaign with Twinbill Split at Keystone

LA PLUME, PA | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball squad opened the season with a twin-bill split against Keystone (2-0) and Goucher (0-1).

Match 1: Keystone 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21)

Aliyah Sanchez led the Scarlet Raiders (0-1) with five kills in the opening match of the tri-match while Maryann Ijeh tallied three total blocks on the defensive side. Sofia Green was the leader for Keystone with a match-high 9 kills.

The lead changed hands several times to open the match but it was a 4-0 run by Keystone that put them in the driver's seat for good. The Scarlet Raiders tallied three straight points, following the 4-0 run by Keystone, book ended by kills from Shayla Moody, however, they were unable to close the gap as they fell behind 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind early but clawed their way back into the set with a pair of aces from Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte. The Giants went on a 5-1 run to separate themselves from the Scarlet Raiders to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

After the Scarlet Raiders brought the third set within two points, Keystone once again created space via a 6-1 run but that gap wouldn't remain large for long as Rutgers-Newark exploded for five straight points to cut the lead down to two. Despite momentum being on their side, the Scarlet Raiders could not overcome their earlier deficit and would seal the deal for the opening match of the season.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Goucher 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17)

Elvin Karakaya paced the Scarlet Raiders with 10 kills in the win over Goucher. Angelyse Orellana led the way with 12 assists and defensively, Simba-Malasarte tallied a team-high 16 digs.

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) bounced back in the second match of the day and used a strong opening to take an 11-6 lead. With a two-point lead, Taylor White sparked a 6-1 run for the Scarlet Raiders to extend its lead over Goucher. With the lead in hand, Rutgers-Newark held on to go up 1-0 in the match.

The second set was a fierce back-and-forth battle that saw the Scarlet Raiders having to climb out of a hole late in the set. A late 6-1 run, backed by a service ace by Nicole Sullivan, set the Scarlet Raiders on pace to close out the set with three straight points.

In the final set, the Scarlet Raiders dominated from the opening serve and jumped out to a 20-12 lead. Karakaya secured the win for Rutgers-Newark with two kills to split the day.
