Flores Stands Out as Men's Soccer Falls to Johns Hopkins, 1-0

NEWARK, NJ | Pedro Flores had a standout game, making seven unforgettable saves, as the Scarlet Raiders fell to Johns Hopkins, 1-0 at Frederick Douglass Field on Saturday afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark (4-3) saw its four-game win streak end in a tightly contested 1-0 loss against the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins (4-2). Despite a solid defensive effort, the Scarlet Raiders couldn't overcome a second-half goal, as Johns Hopkins fired off 18 shots, with eight on target.

Darius Holmes wasted no time getting involved as he registered the game's first shot. However, his early effort sailed just wide. Holmes' near-miss sparked Johns Hopkins into action, as they responded with a flurry of five shots in an 11-minute span, though only one required action from Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper Pedro Flores.

Both defenses proved up to the task in the scoreless first half, but Johns Hopkins found a breakthrough five minutes into the second stanza. Francis Meyer slipped a loose ball sitting at the top of the box to Jonathan Cui, who knocked it past Flores for what would be the game's decisive goal. Flores continued his Herculean effort despite allowing a goal, denying several point-blank attempts, and keeping his team within striking distance.

Rutgers-Newark nearly equalized late in the game when Holmes curled a set-piece effort just wide of the post. The Scarlet Raiders kept the pressure on as Bryan Rodriguez came inches away from leveling the score as his header narrowly missed the mark, glancing just wide of the post in the final minutes.
