Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Kept Off the Board in Loss to Lycoming

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (4-4) played with spirit, but Lycoming (5-1) were the side that capitalized on their chances, and they came away victorious in a 2-0 game.

The match started off slowly, with neither side threatening the other's goal. Rutgers-Newark had a shot from Marco Menacho cleared off the line, and that was as close as either team came in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders had a few moments, but overall struggled to progress the ball through the Warriors' press. Meanwhile, Lycoming was looking to play long balls over the top, but couldn't manage to connect on anything meaningful. The score going into halftime stood at 0-0.

After the break, Lycoming came out with a renewed energy. They fashioned a shot in the very first minute of the second half, and soon after secured the opening goal in the 48th minute. A snap shot from range off the foot of Keller Chamovitz wrong-footed Pedro Flores, and the low dipping shot snuck in at the near post.

Rutgers-Newark worked to muster a response, but they struggled to approach Lycoming's goal. The game continued to be played mostly in the midfield - there were only 16 shots between both teams.

As full time approached, the Scarlet Raiders pushed harder and harder. Lycoming sat back, absorbing as much pressure as possible. With just under 7 minutes remaining, Owen Magee picked up a loose ball after a long clearance and slotted home the Warriors' second goal, doubling their lead.

And that is how the game would end. A frustrating night for the Scarlet Raiders, as they could not find a breakthrough against a strong Lycoming team.

Rutgers-Newark men's soccer will go again this Saturday, September 21st when they take on Shenandoah University at 3:00 pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
