Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Silva Collects a Brace in a Comprehensive Win Over Shenandoah

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (5-4) kept a clean sheet on the way to securing an important win in their penultimate non-conference game against Shenandoah (5-3-1). Final score: 3-0.

The visitors started out the game on the front foot, aiming to threaten the goal early and often. They fired off the first 5 shots of the game, all within the first 10 minutes of play.

However, it was the Scarlet Raiders who struck first. Edgar Silva picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and found the bottom-left corner with impressive precision. Despite starting slow, the Scarlet Raiders put themselves on top after 18 minutes.

The rest of the first half was quite back-and-forth, with the ball mostly remaining in the midfield. The Hornets continued to push for an equalizer but they could not find a breakthrough.

Shenandoah started the second half the same way they began the first, with high energy and attacking intent. They notched an attempt on goal within the first 30 seconds, forcing a save out of goalkeeper Pedro Flores. The momentum remained tilted toward the visitors, while Rutgers-Newark sat back and waited for an opportunity to counterattack.

In the 66th minute, that is exactly what they got. Ian Brown played a beautiful through ball over the top to Jake Milne, who only had one defender to beat before he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He calmly picked his corner and slotted the ball home accordingly, doubling the Scarlet Raiders' lead.

The rest of the game continued as it had been prior to the second goal - the Hornets continuously pushed forward but were unable to find the back of the net. Their frustration built over time, and was only compounded when Edgar Silva netted his second goal with under a minute remaining. Chris Gerbavac found space on the right wing, and after having his first shot saved, he squared it to Silva who smashed it into the top of the net from close range. A strong finish to a relieving win.

The Scarlet Raiders next play on September 25th, when they head to Hackettstown, NJ to take on Centenary University at 4:00 pm.
