Scarlet Raiders Thrash Centenary in Final Non-Conference Game

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ | Men's soccer (6-4) rolled over a struggling Centenary (3-6-1) side, coasting their way to a 5-2 victory away from home.

Edgar Silva remains hot, as he netted the first goal of the competition just five and a half minutes in. Ian Brown tacked on a second in the 20th minute, as the young talent propelled Rutgers-Newark ahead of their in-state foes.

The rest of the first half was quiet from both sides, but Centenary aimed to make a statement coming out of the break. And they managed to do exactly that. In minute 53, Rich O'Brien found the back of the net for the Cyclones, cutting the visitors' lead in half.

However, it would take just under ten minutes for the two goal lead to be restored, as Esteban Hidalgo collected his third of the year. Hidalgo is now one of SIX different Scarlet Raiders to have three goals on the season.

Another new addition to the three goal club is Erick Cortes, whose six minute brace put the game entirely out of reach for Centenary. Cortes, who has had a slow start to the season, may have found his form at the exact right time as the conference schedule approaches. After 80 minutes, Rutgers-Newark led 5-1.

Centenary would find a consolation goal in the last minute of play, with Harison Samayoa Lopez getting on the scoresheet. It may not have meant anything for the result of the game, but it was meaningful to the player as it was his first goal of the year.

Men's Soccer will begin their NJAC run at 6:00 pm this Saturday, September 28th when they play host to Rowan University right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
