Erick Cortes Scores Remarkable Hat-Trick in Dramatic Comeback Draw vs Rowan

NEWARK, NJ | A star performance from the Scarlet Raiders' (6-4-1) #27 as they collect a well-earned point against a nationally ranked opponent in Rowan (3-3-4). Final score: 3-3.

The game did not start well for the home team - just two minutes into the game, a series of incisive passes gave Rowan's Ryan Cleary a clear shot at goal in the box, and he finished into the bottom-right corner to give his team the early lead.

The Scarlet Raiders did not let this setback spoil their spirit. They pressed the Profs hard, making life difficult for their opponents. They also utilized several unorthodox corner kick routines, which kept the visitors on their toes. Despite some good chances on both sides, there were no more goals in the first half. At the break, the score remained 1-0.

It did not take long for things to kick off in the second 45. Less than a minute in, Ryan Cleary was taken down in the box, and the referee awarded the Profs a penalty. Johnny Troiano finished convincingly from the spot into the top-right corner to increase the lead to two. Safe to say, it was not the restart that the Scarlet Raiders were looking for.

But once again, Rutgers-Newark showed impressive resolve. They pushed for their first goal, and they would get it from sophomore Erick Cortes. A perfectly struck free kick over the wall from 30 yards out, the stunning effort put Cortes' team right back in the game in the 60th minute.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders were awarded another free kick, this one just outside the corner of the 18-yard box. Cortes stood over the kick once more, and he curled an absolute beauty off the crossbar in the top-right corner. An electric moment for the home team, as they came back from two goals down to bring things level.

However, their joy was short-lived. Less than 45 seconds later, in the 72nd minute, Profs attacker Ryan Cleary cut in from the right wing and produced a wonderful left-footed finish to restore Rowan's lead. Rutgers-Newark would have to find one more if they wanted to get something out of this game.

And believe it or not, that's exactly what they did! In the 84th minute, a searching ball into the box from Gerson Gonzalez-Quevedo bounced off of a defender and fell to the feet of Cortes, who poked the ball home for his third goal of the game. Miraculously, the Scarlet Raiders came from behind for a second time and secured a draw against the 22nd ranked team in the country!

The men's soccer team will continue their NJAC campaign at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 2nd when they travel to Camden to take on their fellow Rutgers affiliates.
