WVB Trimatch at Swarthmore

Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scarlet Raiders Come Away Empty in Weekend Trimatch

SWARTHMORE, PA | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team (3-7) faced Swarthmore College (3-4) and Mary Washington (6-4), but couldn't pick up a set in either matchup.

Match 1: Swarthmore 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-13)

Set number one was back and forth at first, but Swarthmore overpowered the Scarlet Raiders with seven straight points to go up 20-10. They scored 12 of the last 13 points of the set, and took the set lead with conviction.

Rutgers-Newark were ready to fight in set two, led by breakout Junior Tracey Ilderis. She finished the game with 9 kills, but it wasn't enough to put her team over the top. The Garnet took set number 2 by 7 points.

In the final set of the match, the Garnet really found their rhythm. They went on 5 runs of 3 or more points, with the Scarlet Raiders only able to halt their momentum temporarily. Swarthmore overpowered the Scarlet Raiders, and took home a clean straight-set victory.

Match 2: Mary Washington 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-15)

The Eagles started out with a scorching hot 7 point run, and Rutgers-Newark really struggled to respond. They notched a few good points but couldn't string together enough points, and Mary Washington secured an early advantage.

The Scarlet Raiders were able to turn the tables in set number 2, scoring the first 3 points. But the Eagles were not to be counted out. They transformed a 11-9 deficit into a 20-13 lead, and from there Rutgers-Newark were unable to come back. Brianna Rojas performed admirably, with 7 digs in this matchup, but it was to no avail.

Set 3 was much like the first set, where a mid-set run really set Mary Washington apart. They went 9-1 to extend a 4-point lead to 10. Their attacks were on point, and their hitting percentage was an impressive .212. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raiders, they couldn't keep up.
