Women's Volleyball Sweeps Non-conference Tri-match

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team swept its tri-match on Saturday afternoon at The Golden Dome with a 3-0 win over Rosemont, followed by a 3-1 win against Saint Elizabeth.

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Rosemont 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-12)

The Scarlet Raiders (4-7) hit .240 as a team against the Ravens (0-8) with a match-high 14 kills in the third set. Bella Foster hit a red-hot .444 with 9 kills and one solo block. Elvin Karakaya paced the team with seven digs, while Angelyse Orellana tallied a team-high 12 assists. 

Rutgers-Newark got a fiery start, jumping out to a 9-3 lead behind two kills from Foster. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte and Maryann Ijeh further pushed the Scarlet Raiders ahead with a kill each during a 4-0 to expand their lead to 14-5. Rosemont clawed its way back into the set and cut the lead down to three, 18-15, before the Scarlet Raiders closed the set with a 7-0 run. 

The Scarlet Raiders used the momentum from the end of the second set to jump out to an 8-3 lead. Brianna Rojas tallied three straight service aces to push their lead to 14-4 over the Ravens. Like the first set, the Ravens found their groove and cut the lead to five. Jenelle Headad stopped the run from Rosemon with a pair of kills to set up Foster for the set-winning kill. 

The Ravens ran out of steam in the third set as the Scarlet Raiders took a strong 16-5 lead via a kill by Dezaray Malcolm to cruise to the 3-0 sweep.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Saint Elizabeth 1 (25-12, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15)

As a team, Rutgers-Newark (5-7) hit .172 and held Saint Elizabeth (5-5) to .023 hitting as a team. Tracey Ilderis and Simba-Malasarte each led the team with 10 kills, and Orellana once again led the team with 30 assists. Foster was a force at the net, tallying five blocks and one solo in the win. 

The Scarlet Raiders mirrored their opening to the first set of game one and took a commanding 10-0 lead over the Eagles behind three service aces from Orellana. Shayla Moody and Ijeh later tallied a kill each during a 5-0 run that sealed the opening set for the Scarlet Raiders. 

Saint Elizabeth rebounded in the second set and used a series of runs to keep Rutgers-Newark climbing back into the set. 

In the third, Simba-Malasarte put Rutgers-Newark ahead, 9-7, via a service ace. The teams would go on to trade points until Rutgers-Newark snatched the lead back with a 5-0 run that saw Arisa Khalaj tally two service aces. The Eagles cut the lead to three before Ilderis ended the run with a kill to put Rutgers-Newark ahead 2-1 in the match. 

Karakaya capped an 8-0 run early in the set with a service ace to put Rutgers-Newark ahead 9-3. The Eagles cut the lead to five before the Scarlet Raiders responded with a run to put them in the lead for good.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday, September 24, at 7:00 pm when they host New Jersey City University for their first New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match of the season.
