Women’s Volleyball Lose Heartbreaker in First Conference Match

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (5-8) looked to have it in the bag, but NJCU (5-7) came storming back to complete an impressive reverse sweep, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 10-15).

Rutgers-Newark looked solid to start off the night. After a cagey early exchange of points, they rattled off a 13-1 run to establish a 19-8 lead in set one. Maryann Ijeh was in command of the center of the court, collecting 13 kills and 4 blocks on the night. The home team took the 1-0 set lead and were looking confident as ever.

The second set looked even better for the Scarlet Raiders, as they continued to grow into the game. There was a fair amount of back and forth between the two NJAC teams, but the home side was able to put together two runs at the business end of the set to take it home. 2-0.

However, after going down, NJCU found some fire. They established a 4-1 lead early in set three, and they rode that slim margin until it was 16-12. Then, they put together a 8-1 stretch to keep the evening going and send the game to set number four.

By this point, the momentum had shifted. The game was in the balance, and begging for somebody to take it by the scruff of the neck. That player was Brenda Gonzalez of NJCU. She put up a remarkable 18 kills as the Gothic Knights kept rolling, overcoming a late comeback attempt led by Angelyse Orellana to tie things up at 2-2.

And the NJCU train just had too much force going into the final set. They scored the first five points, and never relinquished that lead. An incredible showing of heart from the visitors, as they ripped the Scarlet Raiders' first conference win right out from under them.

Women's volleyball will look to get back on their feet this Saturday, September 28th when they head to Bryn Athyn, PA to compete in a tri-match against Bryn Athyn and Delaware Valley at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, respectively.
