Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Scarlet Raiders Pick Up One and Drop Another in Weekend Tri-match

BRYN ATHYN, PA | Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball (6-9) started the day strongly with a sweep over the hosts, Bryn Athyn (2-11), but could not keep the momentum going into match two against Delaware Valley (6-8).

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Bryn Athyn 0 (25-17, 25-13, 27-25)

Bryn Athyn jumped ahead early, and were leading the first set by a score of 11-7. However, the Scarlet Raiders completely flipped the script, and in the blink of an eye they were up by nine. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte led the charge with three kills in the 15-2 stretch. Bryn Athyn put up a small fight towards the end, but at that point, the lead was too much to overcome.

The second set started off with an even back-and-forth, with neither team securing a lead larger than two points. However, just like in the previous set, Rutgers-Newark surged ahead in the middle stages, and this time the Lions had no response. With an impressive twelve point margin, the Scarlet Raiders easily secured the 2-0 set advantage.

Bryn Athyn was determined not to go down without a fight. The Scarlet Raiders put together a few short runs, but the hosts were there with them at every step. As the set came down to the wire, Rutgers-Newark with a double set point. The Lions rallied back with incredible resolve to reverse the score, 25-24. But the visitors were not to be denied. With some defensive  help from Elvin Karakaya, who finished with a team-leading 12 digs, they put together three straight points to close out the set and the game.

Match 2: Delaware Valley 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-12, 14-25, 25-18, 25-15)

Just as in match one, the Scarlet Raiders started slow. They found themselves behind early, and they couldn't get the ball rolling in time. Thanks to a strong showing from Emma Helverson, Delaware Valley racked up the kills and established a 20-8 lead. A couple of errors afforded Rutgers-Newark some points late in the set, but in the end the Aggies had no issues getting to 25 in time.

However, after going down 1-0, they came out swinging in the second. Bella Foster exerted her will in the middle, and her 9 kills empowered her team to control the set from start to finish. A strong six point run put the icing on the cake as they tied the match at one set a piece.

After knocking their opponents on their heels, they couldn't find the same magic after the second set. Delaware Valley edged in front to start, and maintained their slight advantage throughout the set. The Scarlet Raiders could not find their feet, and the Aggies confidently restored their lead.

Set number four went very similarly to the set prior - after starting out 11-4, Delaware Valley cruised to an easy close-out. Delaware Valley had one setback, but proved to be the stronger team on the day.

An up and down day for Rutgers-Newark, who end the day with a 1-1 overall record. All in all, they played two good matches against quality opponents, which is solid preparation for their upcoming conference opponents.
