Women's Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Against Farmingdale, 3-2

FARMINGDALE, NY | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team found its second win of the season in thrilling fashion. The Scarlet Raiders (2-2) took down the Rams of Farmingdale State (1-1), 3-2 (25-15, 26-24, 25-22, 25-10, 15-13).

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders quickly fell behind, 3-1, before battling back to knot it up at 10 apiece. With the set tied at 10, the Rams went on a 12-2 run to create separation between them and the Scarlet Raiders. Tracey Ilderis and Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte tried to ignite the offense at the end of the set with kills but could not overcome their deficit as they fell 1-0 in the match.

Rutgers-Newark rebounded in the second set with a 26-24 win. Farmingdale once again used a large run to take a 16-13 lead. However, kills by Ilderis and Shayla Moody, with an ace from Brianna Rojas, brought the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance. Farmingdale was set up to take a 2-0 lead in the match when Taylor White trusted Rutgers-Newark ahead for the win.

The Scarlet Raiders took a 2-1 lead in the match after taking the third set via a 25-22 score. Angelyse Orellana put the Scarlet Raiders ahead 12-11 via a service ace which pushed her squad to a 15-12 lead. White and Moody responded with kills after a run by the Rams which put them back in the lead. Farmingdale nearly regained the lead but the Scarlet Raiders wrapped up the set via a service ace from Fabiana Ayala.

Things did not go as planned in the fourth set for the Scarlet Raiders as Farmingdale soared to a dominant 25-10 win.

That loss didn't deter the Scarlet Raiders, who went on to close out the fifth and final set. Early in the set, neither team could gain a foothold until Rutgers-Newark benefited from three errors by the Rams. The set would eventually be tied up once more before Taylor sparked a 3-1 run to hand Rutgers-Newark the win.
