Scarlet Raiders Taken Down by Coast Guard in Friday Night Matchup

New London, CT | Rutgers-Newark (2-3) struggled against a dominant Coast Guard team (3-2), as the home team collected a 3-0 sweep (25-13, 25-21, 25-18).

Coast Guard jumped out to an early lead in the first set, going up 10-3. They never relinquished that lead, and despite the attacking efforts of Taylor White, who had 11 kills, Rutgers-Newark couldn't keep up.

The second set was a closer-fought competition. Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte showed out, and she finished the game with 15 digs. The Scarlet Raiders won 6 points in a row, putting them up by a score of 11-5. However, the Bears fought back, and put together their own run of 6 points, leaving the score at 24-20. From there, they were able to hold their opponents at bay.

Set number three also gave quite the show. The scoring was back and forth, with the Scarlet Raiders trailing by a score of 9-11 mid-set. Coast Guard put together a couple 3 and 4 point runs late in the set, and they were just too much for Rutgers-Newark on the occasion.

Women's volleyball gets right back into action tomorrow, September 7th, in a tri-match against Suffolk University and Eastern Connecticut State. The game times are 11:00 am and 1:00 pm, respectively.
