Cortes Scores as the Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer Team Slides by Union, 1-0

EWING, NJ | Erick Cortes netted the lone goal in the 1-0 win over Union (1-2) as part of The College of New Jersey Soccer Classic.

Rutgers-Newark (2-2) started the match on the front foot, by recording 10 shots, with seven on target. The Scarlet Raiders came out aggressive, peppering Union's defense, particularly in the first half where eight of their 10 shots were unleashed. Darius Holmes set the tone early by testing Union goalkeeper Jackson Magee just eight minutes into the game, forcing a strong save. Shortly after, Edgar Silva and Martin Pulgarin combined for a series of dangerous attempts, putting Magee under constant pressure. Despite his shot-stopping, the breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Silva slipped a well-timed pass to Cortes, who calmly slotted home the game's opening goal to put Rutgers-Newark ahead.

In the second half, Union's attack came to life, pushing Rutgers-Newark's defense to its limits. Union fired off 10 shots, forcing Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper Pedro Flores into action as he made five crucial saves to protect the lead. Rutgers-Newark, after their fast-paced first half, found themselves on the defensive, registering just two shots after the break. However, their defense stood tall, weathering the storm of Union's second-half flurry. Flores' heroics in goal, combined with the team's strong defensive play, helped the Scarlet Raiders hold on to their slim 1-0 advantage until the final whistle.
