Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rowan Takes Down the Scarlet Raiders in the Golden Dome

NEWARK, NJ | Levi Holton collected his sixth double-double of the season, but Rutgers-Newark (5-11) could not overcome Rowan's (9-7) offensive prowess as they took home an 85-71 victory.

The Profs came out of the gate solidly - Khalif Meares got a transition floater to go at 16:30 to put the visitors up 6-2.

By 11:30, the two teams were back on level terms. Travis Miles threw down a putback dunk to knot the score at 13.

However, Rowan did not give up their lead for long. They sprung forward with a surge of offense, and by the nine minute mark in the first half they were up by seven. Danny Fleming made it nine at 8:15, the largest lead of the game thus far.

The Scarlet Raiders stayed within striking distance. Donovan Crawford hit a three at 5:23 to put his team within five, but Brycen Williams responded in kind. Williams was feeling it in the first half - he had 12 points in 12 first half minutes.

Thanks to Williams' efforts, the Profs went into halftime with a 42-28 lead. Levi Holton and Eli'sha Brown led Rutgers-Newark with six points apiece at the break, but the Scarlet Raiders had a mountain to climb in order to end the evening on top.

Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd and Levi Holton brought the energy with an alley-oop to resume play, but Danny Fleming responded with an emphatic dunk. Rowan did well to weather Rutgers-Newark's storm, keeping their lead intact as they settled back into the flow of play. At 16:22, the profs were on top by a score of 51-37.

Holton was working his magic, creating havoc at the rim. He hit a turnaround jump shot at 13:30 to bring his team within nine. Two minutes later, David Kema brought the gap to nine once more, but the Scarlet Raiders couldn't get any closer than that.

As the second half wore on, Rowan continued to hit three-pointers. Fleming sank two in a row, extending their lead to 16 with 7:30 on the clock. Later in the game, Brycen Williams hit another pair - he ended the game shooting a ridiculous 7-10 from behind the arc.

Rowan simply rode out their lead until the clock hit zero. Once again the effort was strong from Rutgers-Newark, but their opponent's scoring was too overwhelming.

The Scarlet Raiders will be back in action this Wednesday, January 22nd. They'll travel down to Camden, NJ to take on their fellow Rutgers affiliates at 8:00 PM.
