Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Outlasted by Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ | Despite a strong comeback push late in the game, the Scarlet Raiders (5-12) came away second best among Rutgers affiliates. Rutgers-Camden (7-9) emerged victorious by a score of 53-50.

The Scarlet Raptors were in control early. Eric Benjamin laid in from Cameron Downs to give the hosts a five point lead at 15:59 in the first half.

Rutgers-Camden held their lead for the entirety of the half. With 7:28 remaining, Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd hit a pair of free throws to make it a 20-15 game. The Scarlet Raptors had an opportunity to make the difference eight just before the half, but Levi Holton came up big with a rejection as the clock wound down. At the break, the score stood at 29-23.

Both offenses were rocking in the opening minutes of period two. Eric Benjamin sank one from behind the arc at 17:27, and Greg Jones went back down the other end to do the same. At 12:24 Jones scored again to bring the gap to seven, which was followed by nearly three and a half minutes of scoreless play.

When the scoring picked back up, it was just the same as it had been: back and forth, with no getting closer for the visitors. That was until just under 30 seconds remaining when Donovan Crawford drilled a three to make the score 51-46. Eli'sha Brown followed that with a mid-range jumper, and suddenly Rutgers-Newark was in with a chance in the dying embers of the game.

However, good free throw shooting kept the Scarlet Raptors out of danger. Unfortunately for the Scarlet Raiders, victory was just out of reach.

Men's Basketball continues their conference play on Saturday, January 25th. They'll take on Montclair State University at 6:00 PM, right here in the Golden Dome.
