Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Red Hawks Soar Over the Scarlet Raiders

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers-Newark (5-13) fought hard until the very end, but Montclair State (13-5) took the win by a final score of 70-57.

The game got off to a rather slow start. Travis Miles secured the first points of the game for either team almost a minute and a half into the game.

Once the home team scored, the visitors kicked into action. Montclair State got in front by a score of 7-4 and went to work building their lead. At 12:00 the score stood at 11-6, and two minutes later it was 14-7.

Then suddenly, the game saw a big burst of energy. Levi Holton got free in transition, hitting a smooth spin move to get to the rim and score. Donovan Crawford followed that with a long range jumper, and Rutgers-Newark looked like they had something going halfway through the first period.

However, Montclair State was quick to respond. Mike Jackson sunk a triple, and Kieran Flanagan turned a steal into a fastbreak layup. By 9:04, the difference had stretched right back out to eight.

For the rest of the half, the Red Hawks held a consistent advantage of around ten points. Miles hit a three at 5:26 to make it 26-18, but the Scarlet Raiders would get no closer than that. At the break, Montclair State led by a score of 31-20.

Montclair State started the second half on a mission. They just kept on scoring, and soon enough they were ahead 42-24 after a putback dunk by Myles Primas.

The Red Hawks were implementing a full court press that the Scarlet Raiders struggled to work through. The gap between the two teams widened to 20, and stayed there for some time. Holton hit a three at 12:20 to make it 48-31, but Mike Jackson returned the favor on the other end.

Toward the very end of the game, Rutgers-Newark found some momentum. Levi Holton and Eli'sha Brown fought to bring the Red Hawks' lead down to 13 with 2:30 on the clock, but the effort was unfortunately not enough. The Scarlet Raiders have now fallen to 1-10 in conference play.

Men's basketball will head to Jersey City this Wednesday, January 29th for their next competition. They will take on NJCU at 7:30 PM.
