Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scarlet Raiders Out Battled by the Gothic Knights

NEWARK, NJ | Donovan Crawford was one rebound off of a double-double, but his efforts were in vain as Rutgers-Newark (5-14) fell to NJCU (12-7) by a score of 68-59.

After a 4-0 start in favor of the visitors, the two teams remained within one possession of each other for the first 17 minutes of the game. Despite the small margin, it was the Gothic Knights who remained consistently ahead. Greg Jones and Donovan Crawford briefly gave Rutgers-Newark glimpses of the lead, but they were fleeting.

With 2:58 remaining in the first half, Raymond Ezike laid in to set the score at 29-23, finally giving NJCU some space. Bakh Rogers-Robinson got hot right at the close of the half to maintain the momentum, leaving the Scarlet Knights down by eight at the break.

The hosts didn't lose a step between periods, and they went to work extending their lead. Isa Williams-Johnson drilled a three to put his team up by 16—the largest lead of the evening.

Rutgers-Newark was able to close the gap somewhat thanks to scoring from none other than Levi Holton. But the progress was slow. He finally put his team within three after finishing at the rim with 9:45 on the clock. However, Jaheim Lewis nailed a jumper to keep the Gothic Knights just out of reach.

Unfortunately, that is the closest that Rutgers-Newark would get. NJCU managed to hold off the Scarlet Raiders, hitting every single crunch time free throw in the process.

Men's Basketball heads on the road again this Saturday, February 1st. They'll take on Stockton in Galloway, NJ at 1:00 PM.
