SCRANTON, Pa. – Rutgers–Newark women's volleyball battled through a competitive tri-match at Marywood University on Saturday, falling to both Gwynedd Mercy and the host Pacers.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the day against Gwynedd Mercy, dropping the match 3–1. After falling behind in the first two sets (26-24, 25–15), Rutgers–Newark responded with a strong third-set performance, winning 25–18 to extend the match. However, the Griffins regained control in the fourth, taking it 25–17 to seal the victory. The Raiders finished with 35 kills and a .103 hitting percentage, led by Tracey Ilderis with 11 kills, while Cyan Long added nine and Shayla Moody-Santos chipped in eight. Nicole Sullivan served three aces and added 14 assists, and Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte anchored the defense with 19 digs, but the Griffins' efficient attack proved too much to overcome.
In the second contest, Rutgers–Newark faced host Marywood and fell in straight sets (25–11, 25–11, 25–16). The Pacers controlled the tempo throughout, limiting the Raiders' offensive rhythm and capitalizing on key runs in each frame. Despite stretches of strong play, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to sustain momentum as Marywood closed out the sweep.
Rutgers–Newark return home to continue NJAC play on Tuesday, October 14th when they play host to Kean.
