Danbury, Conn. – The Rutgers–Newark women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Western Connecticut State on Tuesday night, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21. Despite showing more fight as the match went on, the Scarlet Raiders couldn't overcome the Colonials' consistent attack and service pressure.
Western Connecticut opened strong, taking the first set comfortably before Rutgers–Newark responded with tighter play in the following frames. The Scarlet Raiders pushed the Colonials deep into each rally, but key late points allowed the hosts to close out the second and third sets to secure the sweep.
Tracey Ilderis led the way offensively for Rutgers–Newark with 13 kills, while Cyan Long anchored the defense with 23 digs. As a team, the Scarlet Raiders tallied 31 kills on 136 attacks and recorded 65 digs. Western Connecticut State finished with 41 kills, seven aces, and 75 digs to move to 14-6 on the year.
With the loss, Rutgers–Newark dropped to 7-16 overall and 1-4 in NJAC play. The Scarlet Raiders will look to regroup and carry their late-match energy into their next contest as they host Brooklyn College and RIT for a tri-match on Saturday, October 25th.
