NEWARK, N.J. – Rutgers–Newark women's volleyball hosted a tri-match on Saturday, earning a sweep against Brooklyn College before falling to Rochester Institute of Technology at The Golden Dome.
In the opener, the Scarlet Raiders handled Brooklyn in straight sets, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24. Rutgers–Newark controlled the tempo early and held off a late rally by the Bulldogs in the third set to secure the victory. Shayla Moody-Santos led the way with 12 kills while Mia Espinoza added 10. Setter Angelyse Orellana dished out 18 assists and anchored a balanced offense that hit .237 as a team.
In the second match, RIT came away with a 3‑1 victory, 20‑25, 25‑18, 25‑12, 25‑16. Rutgers–Newark started strong, capturing the first set, but RIT's offense proved too much in the remaining sets. Cyan Long again paced the team with 11 kills followed by Moody-Santos with 10 and Tracey Ilderis with nine. Orellana steadied the offense again with 18 assists.
Rutgers–Newark returns to NJAC play next week as the Scarlet Raiders travel to Glassboro for a matchup with the Profs.
