Newark, NJ – Despite a strong second-half effort, the Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team fell 3-2 to New York University on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field. The Scarlet Raiders outshot the Violets 13-7 and held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks but couldn't overcome a late NYU surge.
NYU struck first in the seventh minute when Giulio Potenti put the visitors ahead 1-0. The Raiders battled back after the break, as Ian Brown evened the score in the 64th minute off a well-placed pass from Pablo Moreno. However, the momentum quickly shifted when the Violets responded with two goals in a three-minute span on (Joe Brancato in the 75th minute and Terra Nagai in the 78th) to pull ahead 3-1 and put the game out of reach.
Rutgers-Newark continued to fight, with Erick Cortes finding the back of the net in the 86th minute off an assist from Eann Vieira to make it 3-2. Despite the late push, the Raiders were unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes. Goalkeeper Pedro Flores finished with two saves, while Brown, Cortes, and Moreno led the offensive effort for Rutgers-Newark, which moves to 7-5-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
