Newark, NJ – The Rutgers University–Newark women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1–0 non-conference decision to King's College (Pa.) on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field. Despite outshooting the Monarchs and dominating corner kick opportunities, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to find the back of the net .
King's broke through in the 21st minute when Mackenzie Seeley capitalized on an early chance to give the visitors a 1–0 advantage. That goal would prove to be the difference as the Raiders' offense pushed forward throughout the match but couldn't find the equalizer.
Rutgers–Newark controlled possession and generated numerous scoring opportunities, finishing with 21 total shots, including 10 on goal, while earning a commanding 16–2 edge in corner kicks. Avril Sibaja led the Raiders with four shots, including three on goal, while Mariana Valencia and Emily Karlicki each added four attempts and two on target.
Strong defensive efforts from J'nnyah Young and Gabrielle Negvesky combined with three saves from goalkeeper Shaina Sackett kept the Scarlet Raiders within striking distance. On the other end, King's keeper Courtney Monard turned in a strong performance, stopping all 10 shots she faced to secure the shutout.
With the result, Rutgers–Newark moves to 7–5-1 overall and will look to bounce back as they return to conference play with a matchup against Montclair State back at Frederick Douglass Field on Saturday.
