Hoboken, N.J. — Rutgers–Newark men's basketball fell 90–79 on the road at Stevens on Tuesday night in non-conference play.
Stevens held a slim lead for most of the first half before an eight-point flurry from Ayden Brown to close the period helped the Scarlet Raiders trim the deficit to 34–33 at halftime.
Midway through the second half, Stevens was able to push its lead to double digits, with the margin reaching as high as 15 points. Rutgers–Newark mounted a late rally, and a layup by Raheem Murray cut the deficit to just four with four minutes remaining. However, a series of Scarlet Raider fouls and clutch free throws by Stevens helped the Ducks take back control and secure the 11-point victory.
Brown led Rutgers–Newark with 23 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including 4-for-8 from three-point range, while four rebounds. Murray followed with 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting in his first collegiate action.
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders shot 42.9 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from behind the arc.
Rutgers–Newark will look to bounce back this weekend with their home opening John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic. They will begin the tournament with a match up against St. Elizabeth Friday night.
