Scarlet Raiders Rally Late to Edge Maritime on the Road

BRONX, N.Y. — Rutgers–Newark men's basketball battled through a back-and-forth afternoon and used a late second-half push to edge SUNY Maritime, 65–63.

Maritime carried a 38–34 lead into halftime despite a solid offensive start from the Scarlet Raiders. A 42% shooting half for Rutgers–Newark was overshadowed by Maritime's hot hand, as the Privateers knocked down 55% of their attempts to stay in front. Both sides traded short bursts of momentum throughout the opening period, but Rutgers–Newark couldn't string together a run long enough to erase the gap before the break.

The Scarlet Raiders began to shift the momentum after halftime. Rutgers–Newark tied the game at 51–51 with 11 minutes left on a three-pointer from Ayden Brown, then took its first lead of the period moments later when Osa Osagie finished through traffic at the rim. Maritime answered, and Evan Block briefly put the Privateers back in front with a three to make it a 59–58 game with 6:26 remaining. Rutgers–Newark responded again, reclaiming the lead on a crucial tip-in from Manny Rodriguez and never relinquishing it down the stretch.

Brown continued to deliver offensively, finishing with a game-high 25 points, and added three steals. Osa Osagie contributed 10 points and 4 assists off the bench for the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark improve to 2-4 on the season and will look to add a conference win Wednesday as they visit NJCU.
