NEWARK, NJ -Rutgers-Newark fell 87–74 to Montclair State on Saturday at The Golden Dome, with a difficult first half setting the tone. The Scarlet Raiders shot just 40.7% from the field in the opening 20 minutes and struggled to keep pace as Montclair built a 40–27 halftime lead. Although Rutgers-Newark matched the Red Hawks with 47 points in the second half, the early deficit proved too much to erase.
Raheem Murray powered the Scarlet Raiders offensively, scoring 23 points on 47.0% shooting (8-for-17), while Ayden Brown added 19 points, and six assists. Eli'sha Brown was strong on the defesnive end with four blocks on the night. As a team, Rutgers-Newark finished the night shooting 45.0% from the field but struggled from beyond the arc, going just 4-for-19 (21.1%).
Despite stronger play after halftime, Rutgers-Newark couldn't slow Montclair's balanced attack or overcome their own early shooting woes. The Scarlet Raiders move to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. They will look to pick up their first NJAC win of the season next Wednesday, December 10th as they host William Paterson at the Golden Dome.
