GLASSBORO, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team suffered a road loss this afternoon at New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Rowan University. The Scarlet Raiders fell 90-58 loss.
Rutgers-Newark started the game on a 6-0 run thanks to a jumper by Tracey Ilderis, followed by a Aliyah Sanchez layup and a made free throw by Arlenny Medina. The Profs ended the run with a three-point by Sabrina Araujo. Sanchez added another layup 20 seconds later to help the Scarlet Raiders maintain a 7-3 lead.
Rowan managed to squeak out a 7-0 run of its own to take the first lead of the game for the home team at 10-7 with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Scarlet Raiders found themselves in foul trouble and as a result the Profs found themselves at the free throw line. Seven of Rowan's final 12 points in the quarter came from the charity stripe - just what they needed to take a 22-15 advantage after the first quarter.
Back-to-back layups and back-to-back made three-pointers enabled Rowan to take their offensive production to another level. The Scarlet Raiders wouldn't be denied as they scored seven consecutive points - five from the free throw line. Ultimately, at the end of two quarters, Rowan extended its lead to 42-30 heading into halftime.
Rutgers-Newark was outscored 48-28 in the final two quarters, as it was unable to stage a comeback. The Scarlet Raiders shot 36.7 percent from the floor, but made only two three-pointers, and just couldn't connect at the free throw line going 12-for-21. Rowan went 14-for-20 from the free throw line and shot 43.4 percent from the floor, including 10 three-pointers.
Ilderis led the way for Rutgers-Newark (3-21, 0-17 NJAC) with 14 points and four rebounds. Sanchez added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Raihanna Abdus-Salaam scored 10 points.
Kate Herlihy netted a game-high 20 points with five assists and four rebounds for Rowan (16-8, 12-5 NJAC). Sabrina Araujo tallied 16 points, while Kristina Johnson recorded 10 points.
The Scarlet Raiders return home for Senior Night as they close out the season on Wednesday, Feb. 19 versus Kean at 6 p.m. at The Golden Dome.
