Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Defeated by Kean on Senior Day

NEWARK, NJ | After honoring Levi Holton, Travis Miles, and Pascal Dodard, the Scarlet Raiders could not overcome a formidable opponent in Kean. They lost by a score of 86-62.

In fitting fashion, Levi Holton scored the first basket of the competition. Following the opening points, the game started rather slow on offense. The Cougars struggled to create shots—in the first six minutes of play, they had only attempted seven field goals.

Despite the dearth of offense from their opponents, the Scarlet Raiders were only narrowly in front. The reason for this was turnovers, of which they had eight in the first eight minutes. Rutgers-Newark could not find solutions to Kean's full court press, and that eventually earned them a lead eight and a half minutes into the game.

But Levi Holton was not having it. He drilled a three with a defender in his face to put his team back in front by two. Kean responded with a basket of their own, but Holton came right back and delivered a putback dunk. However, the back and forth continued. Nate Pluviose put one in from three point range, but Adam Silas replied for the visitors.

As the first half carried on, the Cougars began to establish an edge. At 4:14, Phil Brown Jr. tipped in a missed layup to make it 36-29. They managed to maintain their advantage in the closing minutes of the period, and at the break Rutgers-Newark trailed by a score of 40-33.

Kean kept their lead secure in the opening minutes of the second half. At 17:16, Silas finished from behind the arc to set the score at 49-39—the first double-digit lead of the evening. Eli'sha Brown found Travis Miles under the cup with a nice bounce pass for a pair of points, but Andrew Turco sank another triple on the other end.

As the visitors' three point shooting heated up, the Scarlet Raiders struggled to stay in the game. By the midway point of the second half, the Cougars were leading by 17. The Scarlet Raiders were able to chip away and bring the difference down to around 10, but that was only temporary. With 1:28 on the clock, D.J. Alicea converted a three point play to make it 83-62.

In the end, it was another disappointing conference loss. The Scarlet Raiders just could not get the stops on defense, and Kean kept on scoring when it was most crucial.

The conclusion of this game brings about the end of the Rutgers-Newark men's basketball season. They finished the year with a 7-18 overall record, and a 3-15 record in conference.
