WILKES-BARRE, PA - Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball experienced a rollercoaster day of competition, splitting a pair of matches in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
The Scarlet Raiders began the day against host, Wilkes University in a hard-fought five-set match. Rutgers-Newark showed resilience early, taking the first set 25–23 before Wilkes responded to even the match at 1–1 with a 25–20 second set win. The Raiders edged ahead again in the third set, 25–23, but Wilkes dominated the fourth 25–15 to force a decisive fifth set. In a tense back-and-forth, Rutgers-Newark narrowly fell 19–17, despite standout efforts from
Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte, who led the team with 15 kills and three aces, and
Angelyse Orellana, who recorded 22 assists.
Cyan Long's 25 digs and
Shayla Moody-Santos' 12 kills also highlighted the Scarlet Raiders play throughout the match.
The Scarlet Raiders rebounded quickly in their second match against St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, earning a confident 3–0 sweep. Rutgers-Newark controlled the pace throughout, winning the sets 25–20, 25–17, and 25–18. Tracey Ilderis led the attack with seven kills, while Moody-Santos and Simba-Malasarte added six each. Orellana orchestrated the offense with 16 assists and contributed an ace, and Long continued her strong defensive play with another 25 dig performance.
