Newark, NJ – Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball battled through a five-set thriller on the road, edging Penn State Abington 3–2 on Tuesday night. The Scarlet Raiders took the opening set 28–26 before the Nittany Lions answered with a 25–21 win in the second. Rutgers-Newark regained control in the third set, 25–22, but Abington forced a deciding fifth with a 25–17 victory in the fourth. In the final frame, the Scarlet Raiders held their composure and secured the match with a narrow 15–13 win.
Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte paced Rutgers-Newark with 13 kills while also contributing 16 digs, and Mia Espinoza (10 kills) and Shayla Moody-Santos (9 kills) added balanced offense. Angelyse Orellana anchored the back row with 22 digs and three aces, while Tracey Ilderis also served three aces to help fuel momentum. Cyan Long and Orellana chipped in with 22 digs a piece to bolster the defense.
Despite being outscored overall (111 –106) and trailing in kills, assists, and digs, the Scarlet Raiders capitalized on timely serving and key defensive stands to come away with the road victory. The win improves Rutgers-Newark to 3–2 on the season and adds to the momentum going into this weekends home tri-match with Albright and CCNY.
