Baltimore, MD – Rutgers-Newark men's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw on the road against Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoo.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Blue Jays broke through less than four minutes into the second half. Scotty Coleman converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to give Johns Hopkins a 1-0 advantage. The Scarlet Raiders wasted little time with their response. Less than two minutes later, Erick Cortes found the back of the net off a setup from Gabe Gomez, leveling the match at 1-1.
From there, Rutgers-Newark carried much of the attacking pressure, finishing with 16 shots, nine of them on target, while also earning eight corner kicks. Cortes led the charge with six attempts, testing Hopkins goalkeeper John Ghanem throughout the day.
Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper David Bejarano was tested less often but came through with two saves of his own. The defense weathered late pushes from the Blue Jays to keep the game level, as Rutgers-Newark walked away with a tie.
