Purchase, N.Y. – Rutgers-Newark men's soccer earned a gritty 2-1 road victory over Manhattanville on Wednesday night, led by a two-goal performance from Erick Cortes.
The Scarlet Raiders wasted little time getting on the board as Cortes opened the scoring in the ninth minute off an assist from Esteban Hidalgo. Rutgers carried the 1-0 lead into halftime while goalkeeper Pedro Flores came up with key saves to keep Manhattanville off the board.
The hosts managed to pull level in the second half when a defensive miscue led to an own goal in the 61st minute. Rutgers quickly responded, however, as Ian Brown set up Cortes for his second goal of the night just over five minutes later to put the Scarlet Raiders back in front.
From there, Rutgers held firm defensively. Flores finished with four saves, and the Raiders kept Manhattanville from finding another equalizer. The closing minutes saw tensions rise, with Manhattanville's David Trujillo receiving a red card, but Rutgers closed out the win.
