Newark, NJ – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team put on an offensive showcase Wednesday night, rolling past Mount Saint Mary (NY) by a score of 5-1. The victory extends the Scarlet Raiders win streak to three.
The Raiders struck early when Vielka Fernandez calmly buried a penalty kick in the 11th minute to put her side ahead. From there, it was all Rutgers-Newark in the first half. Eliza Haghighi delivered a hat trick in just 30 minutes of play, scoring in the 17th, 24th, and 30th minutes to give the Raiders a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Rutgers-Newark kept their foot on the gas. At the 67th minute, Emily Karlicki, assisted by Samantha Vieira, extended the lead to 5-0. Mount Saint Mary found a late consolation goal in the 89th minute from Evie Dowd, but it wasn't enough to spoil the Raiders' dominant night.
Haghighi's three-goal performance headlined the match, while Fernandez and Vieira also played pivotal roles in orchestrating the attack. Goalkeeper Alisha Perez contributed three saves to help secure the win.
