Newark, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team extended its winning ways on Monday night, defeating the City College of New York, 3-0, at Frederick Douglass Field. With the victory, the Scarlet Raiders improved to 6-3 overall and pushed their winning streak to five straight matches, while the Beavers dropped to 1-4.

The Scarlet Raiders controlled the pace from the opening whistle, outshooting CCNY 24-4. Vielka Fernandez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to give Rutgers-Newark the lead. Just ten minutes later, Mariana Valencia doubled the advantage with a goal assisted by her sister Viviana Valencia, sending the Raiders into halftime with a 2-0 cushion.

Rutgers-Newark continued to pressure the Beavers in the second half, and Emily Karlicki put the match out of reach with a goal in the 56th minute. Defensively, the Scarlet Raiders were steady, allowing just two shots on goal while posting the shutout. CCNY goalkeeper Laila Issa was busy throughout the evening, finishing with 10 saves to keep her side in contention.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to carry their momentum into conference play when they host Rowan on Saturday night their NJAC opener.
