NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team dropped its NJAC opener on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-0 at Frederick Douglass Field against nationally ranked Rowan University.
The Scarlet Raiders were under pressure early as the visitors built a sizeable first-half lead. Rutgers-Newark battled throughout the contest but trailed 5-0 at the break before Rowan added four more in the second half to close out the match.
Rutgers-Newark managed three total shots, including two on target, while facing 24 attempts from Rowan. The Scarlet Raiders also defended nine corner kicks on the afternoon.
Goalkeepers Alisha Perez and Shaina Sackett split time in net, combining for nine saves against the relentless Rowan attack.
Rutgers-Newark (6-4, 0-1 NJAC) will look to regroup in its upcoming conference match as they travel to Rutgers-Camden on October 1st.
