Rutgers-Newark Secures First NJAC Victory Behind Stifling Defense

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers–Newark capitalized on a strong defensive performance to earn a 58–49 NJAC victory over New Jersey City University on the road, marking its first conference win of the year.

A tough defensive first half saw the teams swing back and forth to open the game, with both sides struggling to find consistent offense. NJCU shot just 27 percent from the floor in the opening half, while Rutgers-Newark finished at 35 percent. The Scarlet Raiders gained some control in the latter stages of the half, making enough plays to hold the lead and head into the break with a slim 24–21 advantage.

Rutgers-Newark kept the defensive pressure on in the second half, steadily extending its lead as the period wore on. The Scarlet Raiders' advantage ballooned to double digits midway through the half, reaching 19 points with six minutes remaining as they continued to force tough looks and convert on the other end.

NJCU made a late push, going on a 9–1 run to cut the deficit to eight with two minutes to play, but the surge proved too little, too late. Rutgers-Newark remained composed, knocking down free throws down the stretch to maintain a comfortable lead and close out the win.

Raheem Murray led the Scarlet Raiders with 16 points, while Greg Jones provided a spark off the bench, contributing 13 points in the victory.

The Scarlet Raiders will return home this Saturday, hosting Stockton at the Golden Dome.
