MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Montclair State University Thursday night at the Panzer Athletic Center in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.
The Scarlet Raiders fell by set scores of 25-11, 25-22 and 25-11, moving to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in NJAC play. Montclair State improved to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Bella Foster and Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte led the Scarlet Raiders with nine kills apiece. Foster finished with a .348 hitting percentage and added one solo block and one block assist for 10.5 points, while Simba-Malasarte recorded 11 digs.
Lucia Gallo added 11 digs, while Cyan Long contributed 10 digs and four assists. Nicole Sullivan paced the Scarlet Raiders with 16 assists and added four digs, one ace and a kill.
Rutgers-Newark opened the second set with a 2-0 lead before Montclair State battled back. The Scarlet Raiders tied the set at 14-14, but the Red Hawks pulled away late to secure a 25-22 victory and take a 2-0 match lead.
Montclair State controlled the opening set, taking a 25-11 decision, before closing out the match with another 25-11 win in the third set. The Red Hawks finished with 40 kills and hit .252 as a team, while Rutgers-Newark recorded 25 kills and a .040 hitting percentage.
Rutgers-Newark will have a weekend of rest before returning to play on Tuesday, October 6th as they welcome William Paterson to the Golden Dome.
