Newark, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team erupted for three second-half goals Wednesday night, defeating Stockton University, 3-0, in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action at Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (5-2-3, 2-1-0 NJAC) and Ospreys (2-5-5, 1-1-1 NJAC) battled through a scoreless opening half before Rutgers-Newark broke through after halftime.
Goalkeeper David Bejarano kept Stockton off the scoreboard in the opening half, making five saves as the Ospreys generated nine shots. Rutgers-Newark recorded four shots before the break.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring in the 72nd minute when Daniel Velazquez converted a penalty kick. Zahra-Deen Amadou drew the foul while attempting a shot inside the box, earning Rutgers-Newark the penalty and giving Velazquez his first goal of the season.
Just four minutes later, Geronimo doubled the Scarlet Raiders' advantage. Stockton's Cole Butler came well off his line on a clear-cut attempt, briefly leaving the goal unattended. Geronimo took advantage of the opportunity from deep, sending his shot into the open net in the 76th minute.
Geronimo struck again in the 83rd minute to complete his brace. Samuel Morales had his shot saved, but Geronimo was there to capitalize on the rebound and push the Scarlet Raiders' lead to 3-0.
Rutgers-Newark controlled the second half, outshooting Stockton, 11-1, after halftime and finishing the match with a 15-10 advantage in shots. The Scarlet Raiders also held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
Bejarano finished with six saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action Saturday, traveling to The College of New Jersey as they continue NJAC play at 11 a.m.
