MELBOURNE, Fla.- The Raiders continue their spring training games on March 15, taking two losses from UMass Boston and MCLA-MA, despite their continuous efforts.
In the first game of the day, the Raiders ultimately fell 8–5 to the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in a competitive nonconference match-up.
Rutgers-Newark showed early energy at the plate, generating baserunners and applying pressure on the Beacons' defense. Mariah Rimas-McManus helped set the tone offensively, collecting key hits and aggressively moving around the bases, including swiping third during one scoring opportunity. The Scarlet Raiders continued to threaten throughout the middle innings, working to string together hits and keep the game within reach.
Despite the strong effort, UMass Boston used a big second inning and added insurance runs later in the sixth inning to maintain their lead. Rutgers-Newark continued to fight back offensively and put together several scoring chances, but the Beacons were able to close out the game late.
In the second game of the day, Rutgers-Newark fought to improve their outing but came up short against the MCLA Trailblazers 13-4 in 6 innings. After falling behind early, the Raiders responded with a strong third inning, scoring 3 runs to cut the deficit to 5-3. Keelin O'Brien and Josephine Morales helped to spark the rally, while Kayla Cardozo reached twice with walks to keep pressure on the MCLA defense. However, the MCLA offense broke the game open late with a six-run sixth inning. The Raiders finished with 7 hits but struggled to control the Trailblazers offense.
The team is back at it again on March 16th with two more nonconference games on their spring training trip to Melbourne, Florida, against Hartford at 2:30 pm and Salve Regina at 4:45 pm.
