Baseball Splits With Plymouth State In Non-Conference Double Header

Newark, NJ- In game one, the Raiders put together a strong all-around performance on Saturday, March 21, topping Plymouth State, 6-1, at Weequahic Park. The Scarlet Raiders struck early with a first-inning run and broke things open with a three-run fourth, adding insurance in the fifth and sixth to stay in control throughout.

At the plate, Trevor Wallace led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 day, driving in two runs and scoring twice, while Michael Weinbel also added three hits to pace a 12-hit attack. Matthew Torreto chipped in a run from the leadoff spot as Rutgers consistently applied pressure offensively.

On the mound, Rutgers-Newark was just as sharp, limiting Plymouth State to four hits and one late run while striking out eight. The pitching staff worked efficiently to keep the Panthers off balance and secure the win.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Rutgers-Newark battled throughout but came up short in a 4-2 loss to Plymouth State on Saturday at Weequahic Park. The Scarlet Raiders struck first, plating a run in the opening inning behind early offensive pressure, but a four-run second inning by Plymouth State proved to be the difference.

Despite outhitting the visitors 9-7, Rutgers-Newark couldn't capitalize on key opportunities, leaving 10 runners on base. Matthew Torreto led the offense with a strong 2-for-5 performance, including a triple and a run scored, while Trevor Wallace added a hit and a walk. Michael Weinbel drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, the Scarlet Raiders settled in after the second inning, with the bullpen limiting further damage and keeping the game within reach. Rutgers-Newark added a late run in the eighth but couldn't complete the comeback.
