MAHWAH, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark track and field teams kicked off the outdoor season Friday at the Ramapo Invitational, with the women's team sitting in seventh place after day one competition.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by a standout performance from Fejiro Akiri, who captured a first-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 11.63 meters. Teammate Christine Pierre-Louis also contributed in the event, placing 12th with a throw of 9.80 meters.
On the men's side, Azor Chareyre paced Rutgers-Newark in the field events. He recorded a ninth-place finish in the javelin throw and also competed in the shot put, where he placed 23rd with a mark of 10.74 meters.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Saturday as the Ramapo Invitational continues with day two of competition.
